Welcome to Ethical Theory!

Welcome to Jen Everett's Ethical Theory class blog.  Only students in the class may post entries or comment on posts.  However, the blog is publicly available for reading.  So invite your friends to follow our conversation.  It's sure to be a thought-provoking semester.

We're going to use this space for several purposes throughout the semester:

  • First, it is a place to practice and hone formal academic writing skills.  Approximately six students will be assigned to post a "reading response" mini-essay (~500 words) each week that engages in the standard activities of summarizing and critiquing our texts.  Due by 8 pm on Sunday (for Monday's readings) or 8 pm on Tuesday (for Wednesday's readings), your choice.
  • Second, it is a place to draw connections between the material we are discussing and the wider world.  Two students each week will be assigned to post a "reality check" entry on this blog which connects the course material we are discussing to a source outside our course materials.  This may be a current event, another course, an activity on campus, a work of the arts or popular culture, or anything else to which the week's material applies or is relevant. Due by 8 pm on Tuesday.
  • Third, it is a place to engage in peer critique and collegial academic discourse and to extend discussion of ideas we are discussing in class.  To that end, everyone who is not assigned to post a reality check or mini-essay is expected to post at least one substantive comment on one of your peers' entries for the week.  Due by 8 pm on Thursday.

The grading rubric and further guidelines for these entries are available on Moodle.
